Open market operations is one of the most frequently used tools that is being exercised by any central bank including FED. Open market operations basically involve the buying and selling of securities in open market in order to achieve the different monetary policy outcomes. Open Market Operations tend to provide an opportunity to FED to affect the banking system in following manner: 1. Affecting interest rates: through open market operations, FED basically mop out or in the liquidity within the banking system. By buying the securities, FED basically increase the supply of loanable funds thus interest rates tend to go down for short term period whereas by selling the securities, the liquidity is decreased which than increase the interest rates. 2. Controlling the volume of Credit: Through open market operations, FED basically increase or decrease the volume of credit as it either suck in the excess liquidity from the market or pump in new funds into the system. Through both methods, the overall extent of loanable funds can be increased or decreased in order to achieve the monetary policy objectives of the firm. 3. Open market operations also tend to affect the bank deposits because by floating securities in the market, FED basically take out funds from the banks which indirectly affect the deposits of the banks. Banks are required to keep a certain percentage of their funds as reserve with the FED in order to meet the uncertainties. FED can increase or decrease this percentage with the passage of time and according to the economic situation. Further banks can also borrow from the one window facility at the FED and the rate charged by FED on such funds is called discount rate.

Gender and Sexual Studies - Women and War Research Paper
Gender and Sexual Studies - Women and War - Research Paper Example Women and War The supposed structural adjustment policies (SAP) of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is still wreaking havoc on women living in less developed countries. Labor oppression of poor women, heterosexist bureaucracy, environmental ruin, and militarization all raise weighty issues for feminist movements today.2 Although feminist movements all over the world have been diversely triumphant, we become heir to several issues women of the earlier periods confronted. However, there are new issues as well as we try to understand a world permanently blemished by the unsuccessful attempt of communist and postcolonial capitalist societies to meet the economic, social, religious, and psychological demands of most of the worldââ¬â¢s people. Globalization has increasingly become representative of the motives and goals of the free market and companies rather than autonomy and liberty from economic, cultural, and political subjugation for all the inhabitants of t he world.3 There are several of the issues tackled in ââ¬Ëwomen and warââ¬â¢. ... interventions into the Western-dominated discipline, while at the same time emphasizing the effort that can and has to be carried out to visualize and promote cross-cultural feminist unity. The topic ââ¬Ëwomen and warââ¬â¢ is a key representation of the ties between mobilizing, deliberation, and analysis and the actualization of feminist unity promoted by such topic. Drawing on diverse readings and documents, the discussion has introduced a general, compelling, critical analysis of global gendered militarism, emphasizing womenââ¬â¢s opposition to it. Furthermore, this discussion is a testimony to the flexibility, ingenuity, and profoundly critical resistance by women on the different ââ¬Ëvanguardsââ¬â¢ formed by wars across the globe. Drawing on a combination of published sources and histories, ââ¬Ëwomen and warââ¬â¢ discusses the gendered intricacies underlying the public debates that came with, and still come with, the supposed global gendered militarization. W hether we are discussing the involvement of women in warfare as components of the military or as laborers on the territory, or whether we are discussing several of the emerging sexual liberties that appeared to come with the extensive marshalling of the population, this form of sweeping disruption of daily social life could always have an effect on customary concepts of gender. The dilemma, in many private and public domains, was to make sure, as much as possible, that the long-established gender structure must not be disrupted. In our interesting discussion of ââ¬Ëwomen and war, several processes by which efforts were exerted to realize such objectives were included. The notion of nationalistic femininity aimed to unite with the different ways within which women were organized into warfare without destabilizing prevalent

Provision Accounting and International Accounting Standards Essay
Provision Accounting and International Accounting Standards - Essay Example . It was for your convenience to figure out the definition) The trend of creating provisions under the conventional accounting practices was widely prevalent due to the fact that it allowed the companies to manipulate their earnings leading to misrepresentation of facts in the financial statements. This may relate to the "big bath" theory of accounting as defined by Healey (1985) as a method pervasively used by the companies in order to show more write offs of assets and also to project more accruals or provisions reflecting a reduction in earnings to the income statement, thus leading to the misrepresentation of the company's actual earnings. There may be several reasons behind the interest of management in the misleading reporting of the company's actual gains or losses. According to Kirschenheiter and Melumad (2002), the company's management may conceal the current years' profit or report less than actual gains with a view to report great hike in the company's profit in the future years. Abarbanell and Lehavy (2003) also confirm the same view regarding the management's discretion to conceal the company's profits. Another factor as discussed by Sikora (1999) in the case of mergers and acquisition, when new directors are appointed in the company and the management reports loss to project better management by the newly appointed directors in the future years. Healey (1985) also points out another cause for management to report less-than-actual earnings as being the expectation of change in bonus to the company's management. In this case, the company reports less than the actual increase in profit for the current year so a s to show a hike in profit the next year to earn better bonus for the management. Moore (1973) further relates the concept of "big bath" theory of accounting to the change in management factor. Beneish (2001) concludes that the chief objectives of management in managing the profit may be to create a balance and stability in the company's trend of earning profit or the company may manipulate its earnings at the time when its inflating its shares for the first time in the market in order to induce the shareholder by projecting a stabilised earnings record. All of the above-stated theories Healey (1985), Kirschenheiter and Melumad (2002), Sikora (1999), Moore (1973) and Beneish (2001) relate the use of provision accounting by the companies and their management to the theory of big bath accounting. Companies used it to affect the calculation as well as presentation and communication of the company's profits to its shareholder, investors, governmental authorities and other users of financial statements. Thus, they exploited the loopholes found in

Adoption of Renewable Energy Technologies in the United Kingdom Essay
Adoption of Renewable Energy Technologies in the United Kingdom - Essay Example A huge proportion of the world's energy resources come from natural gases, fossil fuels, and nuclear fuels. These types of energy sources emit harmful chemicals and residues in the atmosphere, on the soil and in various bodies of water, which are harmful to the environment. Recent studies estimate that the demand for energy will increase affectedly within the next few decades. Many scientists around the world agonize over the postulated insufficiency of natural gases which are now considered to be finite and unsustainable. Also, global environmental problems like global warming call for cleaner energy sources in order to preclude degenerative developments in the world's environmental conditions. The running down of United Kingdomââ¬â¢s vast energy resources, along with the forecasted escalation of the worldââ¬â¢s energy consumption imperils its energy security. Jamieson 2 Sole reliance on fossil and nuclear fuels void its commitment to reducing energy consumption and cutting ca rbon emissions. The national government now turns to exploiting renewable energy sources that will increase energy supply. The adoption of renewable energy will also help in the decarbonization of the atmosphere using Carbon and Capture Technology. The Department of Energy and Climate Changeââ¬â¢s Office for Renewable Energy Development exerts effort in order to understand how this transformation can be achieved and to discuss the possible barriers that may debar adoption of renewable energy. How to achieve development of diverse renewable resources The implementation of renewable energy technologies in the United Kingdom can ââ¬Å"meet the target to deliver 15% of the UKââ¬â¢s energy consumption from renewable resources by 2020â⬠(Department of Energy and Climate Change, ââ¬Å"Renewable Energyâ⬠). There are eight (8) renewable resources technologies that will be used to generate at least 15% of the total energy consumption in the United Kingdom by 2020. These are the following: (1) Onshore wind; (2) Offshore wind; (3) Marine Energy; (4) Biomass Electricity; (5) Biomass Heat; (6) Air-source and Ground-source heat pumps; (7) Renewable Transport; (8) Solar and Geothermal Technologies. The national government should focus on the following measures in order to achieve these developments: 1. Enabling access to the grid. Deployment of energy generated by renewable energy resources cannot be completed without access to the grid. This can make or break the plan. The government must ensure that grids are supplied on all renewable energy sites in order to ease deployment actions. Jamieson 3 2. Making sure of a sustainable supply of bioenergy. Bioenergy is seen to possibly contribute almost half of the total energy production needed to meet the 15% target. However, matters pertaining to its sustainability may reduce the use of bioenergy. 3. Technological Advancement. A constant upgrade on the technical support is needed to elevate efficiency on the depl oyment of energy throughout the country. While tools and equipment used in some forms of renewable energy technologies are relatively advanced, others are yet struggling with having the comparatively outmoded technology.Ã
